As Greg enters the new school year, he’s eager to put the past three months behind him . . . and one event in particular.

Unfortunately for Greg, his older brother, Rodrick, knows all about the incident Greg wants to keep under wraps. But secrets have a way of getting out . . . especially when a diary is involved.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules chronicles Greg’s attempts to navigate the hazards of middle school, impress the girls, steer clear of the school talent show, and most important, keep his secret safe. (show less)

Ben's (10-year-old) review:

This book is the second book in the stories of Greg Heffley. He is a very wimpy kid and all you need to do is ask him to prove it.
Greg's school year isn't going well so far and his summer vacation is just about to get worse. His brother, Rodrick, keeps messing with him, he can't watch TV, he's lost video game priviledges, and his most important secret has been let out by his brother, Rodrick.
While reading this book, I felt like these kinds of things could never happen, but in this story they do.
It's impossible to imagine how many problems Greg has happened during his summer vacation that probablay wouldn't be possible.
The illustrations are funny.
I recommend this book to all ages except for second or third grades because it would be a little difficult for them to understand the problems Greg is about to have making his decisions. Everything Greg does is a little bit hilarioius and full of problems. It shows how many problems you can possibly have before going back to school. (show less)

I'm very disappointed that this is related to a best-selling children book. There wasn't much interesting content and the images were sometimes a distraction. I also couldn't identify with the character (although this could be due to my coming from a different culture), but with the way the main character played out, it seemed like he was more of a spineless bully than just a wimpy kid. Children could do with more entertainment from other books. (show less)

I enjoyed this book, though I will confess I have not read the first book. Rodrick Rules was gifted to me, and I had just finished reading a far denser, complex book. I wanted to read something a little easier to give my brain a break!

I was charmed by the style of writing - Greg Heffley's journal entries and illustrations were engaging, and through them, I gained a little insight into the mind of a pre-adolescent boy. A good thing for a secondary teacher to have, I'd wager!

The characters were simple and typical. It's obvious the Rodrick is the main antagonist, that Greg is the "victim." However, I found myself getting rather frustrated and annoyed with Mom and Dad, who clearly enable their children's poor behavior. But I suppose that the most disappointing character in this particular book was Greg. In this volume, I did not see him as wimpy - perhaps he wasn't popular, and he certainly got picked on, but I saw no indication of "wimpiness." In fact, some of the things he did to his friends and family were downright rude.

I'm willing to chalk Greg's antics to his age, giving it the "boys will be boys" attitude I normally despise. The book was, after all, told from this young boy's perspective, so information is skewed and limited. I come to this book as an adult woman, who had no male siblings growing up. I simply cannot relate to Greg and Rodrick's predicaments.

Overall, it was a fun read. I'm definitely going to pick up the first volume, to have a better background on the Heffley family. (show less)

Jeff Kinney is soooo brilliantly amusing! I read this for a book review I prepared for a 5th grade kid, but after that I went on & read his other books. I can't wait for the movie to be out next year!
