From the New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin comes a novel that shows how someone with a “perfect life” can lose it all—and then find everything.

Darcy Rhone thought she had it all figured out: the more beautiful the girl, the more charmed her life. Never mind substance. Never mind playing by the rules. Never mind karma.

Darcy Rhone thought she had it all figured out: the more beautiful the girl, the more charmed her life. Never mind substance. Never mind playing by the rules. Never mind karma.

But Darcy’s neat, perfect world turns upside down when her best friend, Rachel White, the plain-Jane “good girl,” steals her fiancé, while Darcy finds herself completely alone for the first time in her life…with a baby on the way.

Darcy tries to recover, fleeing to her childhood friend living in London and resorting to her tried-and-true methods for getting what she wants. But as she attempts to recreate her glamorous life on a new continent, Darcy finds that her rules no longer apply. It is only then that Darcy can begin her journey toward self-awareness, forgiveness, and motherhood.

Something Blue is a novel about one woman’s surprising discoveries about the true meaning of friendship, love, and happily-ever-after. It’s a novel for anyone who has ever, even secretly, wondered if the last thing you want is really the one thing you need. (show less)

The follow-up to "Something Borrowed" was not as enjoyable as the former for me, but with Giffin's writing style, is still such a good read. Darcy was just dumped by her fiancee, whom she learned cheated on her with her best friend, Rachel. Nevermind she became pregnant by Dex's best friend Marcus. For the first time in her life, she sees the people around her have moved on and their lives are not all about her anymore. She needs to get away from everyone, so she moves to London with her friend, Ethan, and again tries to recreate her Manhattan lifestyle, despite a baby on the way. She finally gets her ass handed to her by Ethan, who lays it on the line: she is a selfish bitch, has no real understanding of friendship, and save a few redeeming qualities, are a worthless human being. (Paraphrasing, of course.) The rest of the story is her transformation from being the bitch to being a warmer, more compassionate being, and what it truly means to love and be loved as a flawed individual.

I did not relate to Darcy the way I related to Rachel, and that may have been why this book was not as much fun for me. Darcy is such an annoying person. She is so deeply insecure that she compares herself to everyone and everything, looking for some way to be better than them. Her constant need to be redeemed makes me want to smack the shit out of her. When she has her ego blown away by Ethan, I had issues with her transformation - it came too easily and didn't convince me that someone could change 30 years of egocentric behavior that well. something like that takes years, not weeks or months.

Nonetheless, this is a good read, and Emily Giffin has become one of my favorite chick writers. It is worth checking out, even if you are not into egomaniacal heroines. (show less)

(I'm putting a spoiler warning here, even though everything I'm exposing is pretty much said in the description.)

I enjoied reading about a character I found frustratingly self-centred; it was quite different than the characters in the books I usually read.

The part that bothered me was her transformation. I was hoping Giffin would put her own twist on the whole "become a better person" thing, but it was basically the same tired story that's been done a hundred times before.... (show more)

    Girl has everything.
    Girl loses everything.
    Girl runs away from problems.
Girl gets yelled at by friend.
    Girl changes overnight.
    Girl lives hapilly ever after.

The only thing that made Darcy's transformation worth reading was the fact that it was an extention of "Something Borrowed", and you got some (though not much) details as to what happened with Rachel and Dex after the last book ended.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoied this book and I do recommend it to those who have read (or will read) Something Borrowed - I'm just saying I was hoping for more. (show less)

It took a little bit for me to get into this book which is quite the opposite of how I felt about "Something Borrowed". That being said I wound up LOVING the book once Darcy started to really grow as a character. I definitely was not rooting for her in any way shape or form - especially not to be the leading lady in Ethan's love life but I have to admit I was a little misty eyed when she realized the connection she had to him even after his many doses of tough love. One aspect I really liked: the fact that Emily didn't allow for Darcy and Rachel's friendship to magically rekindle because of circumstance the way so many movies and books so often do. I am a huge fan of forgiveness and moving forward but it truly takes time and it shows that you can be genuinely happy for someone without having to have past hurts completely resolved when maturity is in place. Best of the Two?

I don't know why...but I liked this book better than the first. Maybe because I didn't like Darcy's character, then she changes her whole disposition. I also like the setting being in London. Which one did you like?
