Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl---until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiancé. Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend.

I am a sucker for a good romantic/comic novel, and this was just what i was looking for! I usually don't read a book multiple times but i found myself reading this 3 or 4 times. The character of Rachel, being the good girl who is smart and insecure about her looks, struggling in a job she hates is completely relatable. Even as she was stealing her best friends fiancee i was rooting for her, it seemed she deserved it, and that is a sign of a good character. Someone we root for even as they are doing these horrible things. I did not feel bad for her friend Darcy, who was shallow, self centered, and constantly has to outshine everyone else. The questions posed throughout the novel were difficult though. Is love worth more than friendship? Did Darcy deserve that, even though she was a shallow, vain person? Overall, i loved this book and reccommend it to anyone looking fora nice, sweet romantic novel with a hint of comic relief. (show less)

I loved the thought of Something Borrowed and didn't mind the easy read. Although, I found myself skimming and thought the story line a bit predictable.

Yes, the characters were relatable. What girl doesn't feel inadequate or have a bullshit girlfriend that thinks the universe revolves around her, and only her? And, I did enjoy New York and the Hamptons as this backdrop to a summer between friends. The author captured a fun night life scene and the absurd few who actually house share in the Hamptons.

However, as messy as the situation was, it came across too neat and tidy, and rapped up too quickly. It would have been nice to show a bit more progression of Rachel's character claiming her life and refusing to remain in an unhealthy friendship.

So, I guess, this review would be mixed. For a quick beach read where you can pick it up and put it down, it was fun. Fun, yes, but still annoying at times. (show less)

Emily Giffin has got some talent. I connected with Rachel right from the beginning. Knew what she was going through with being second best. Great story. Darcy is a pain in the butt best friend. A love to hate type character. Dex is a guy who doesn't want to break anyone heart but does the right thing in the end.

At first I was not sure I would be able to get into it and be able to finish it. To my surprise I was able to do both within 4 days, which is something I do not think I have done wi... (show more)

I will definitely be looking into her other books. Especially "Something Blue". That one kind of looks like it is based on this book some. Seems like Darcy (the best friend) is the one who is telling the story now, instead of Rachel. Hopefully it is a good read too :) (show less)

I really liked this book, which I found odd b/c I usually like "cleaner romances" as opposed to stories where one or both characters are cheating on their signifigant other. I found it particularly odd that I liked it so much since this wasn't just any "other woman", but her best friend. Nonetheless, I did like it and am really curious to read Something Blue now. I found it particularly odd that I liked it so much since this wasn't just any "other woman", but her best friend. Nonetheless, I did like it and am really curious to read Something Blue now. Giffin did such a great job making Rachel so likeable and making us so sympathetic to her, that I truly felt myself rooting for her and not even feeling bad about it. Not sure what that says about me, justifying cheating like I did in order to enjoy this story, but to me that's the mark of a good writer: the ability to make you sympathetic to a character that you otherwise wouldn't be sympathetic toward. One of my other favorite writers, Jodi Picoult, is really good at this as well, which is what makes her one of my favorites. Definitely a good read for chick-lit fans (show less)
