I read The Ragamuffin Gospel a few months ago, and I wasn't blown away. A friend suggested this text as a better example of Manning's work. Unfortunately, this book also failed to do it for me. For the most part, Manning seems to be more concerned with quoting random sources that sort of support his positions than actually presenting and defending a coherent idea. Don't get me wrong: I don't necessarily think that Manning's thesis is wrong, but I just don't think this book was really as astounding as people have made it out to be. Once you read the first two chapters, you already know exactly the point he's making and there's not really any reason to delve any further. Sloppy writing and pseudo-intellectual writing doesn't make an average book good. (show less)

To me, Manning is that grandfatherly type who sits in his easy chair telling you the good, the bad, and the ugly of his/the Christian walk. I can almost feel the pat on the back, and the "hang in there" smile. (show less)

There are times when trusting in God's goodness and guidance is nearly impossible. But it is the one and only thing that God requires of us. We cannot love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength without absolutely trusting Him first. This book makes that point clearly and persuasively.
