The Line Between
The long-awaited sequel to the popular classic The Last Unicorn is the centerpiece of this powerful collection of new tales from a fantasy master. Traditional themes are typically infused with modern sensibilities—reincarnated lovers and waning kings rub shoulders with heroic waifs; Schmendrick the Magician returns to adventure, as does the ghost of an off-Broadway actor and a dream-stealing shapeshifter; and Gordon, the delightfully charming "self-made cat," appears for the first time in print, taking his place alongside Stuart Little as a new favorite of the young at heart. This wide-ranging compilation contains sly humor and a resounding depth that will charm fans of literary fantasy.

I initially started this book because of "Two Hearts," the story billed as the follow-up to "The Last Unicorn." That said, many of the other stories in this collection are quite excellent. My personal favorites are "Gordon, the Self-Made Cat" (the story of a mouse who goes to cat school) and "Quarry" (cut of the same cloth as "The Innkeeper's Song"). "The Line Between" is also full of intimate commentary from Peter S. Beagle, which makes it a more personal read. It's not his best, but it's worth reading. (show less)

It has the Last Unicorn's sequel "Two Hearts" in it, a warning though, the sequel is nothing like I expected it to be, but it's still good. My fave short story in this collection though is Salt Wine, which is about the reward two men get for saving a merman from a shark, and the way that reward changes their lives...it's excellent!
