Ex Machina, Vol. 5: Smoke, Smoke

In this volume we deal with the war on drugs from different standpoints. While some of the opinions are largely familiar, they are nonetheless compelling within this narrative and often fit well with the characters supporting them.
In addition, we discover that some close to Hundred are plotting his downfall from behind the scenes. What specifically they have in store is still left unexplained at the moment. Hundred also experiences an interesting dream; one which will likely have greater implications (which seems quite intriguing) but is largely a mystery at this point. It would seem that someone with similar powers may have a role to play as well.
The one-shot at the end of this collection is of interest, but lacks the narrative 'oomph' of the rest of the series. It's somewhat nice to learn about Bradbury's past, but at the same time, it feels like overkill to devote an entire issue to it.
As always, the art shines and the characters are illustrated realistically and effectively. Highly recommended.
this time the series focuses on the political issues related to drugs & then finishes with a largely forgettable one-shot.
Continued character and plot development, moves the story forward. Touching on all sorts of issues about actions, non-actions and their consequences.
you know which character I like more than Bradbury in the last issue?? 'motherfuckin' nobody.'
I can hear the heads lauding this one: "Duuude.... Mayor Hundred is 420-friendly. Kewl."
When he's not holding his head in despair over city permits, petty crime or poll ratings, it turns out that Hizzoner likes to burn a bone or two. Yeah, just what I look for in a superhero.
This series is just gets preachier and preachier over the most inane, uninteresting things. And this volume solidfies my opinion that "Ex Machina" is merely a sounding board for Brian Vaughan to tell me all about his personal politics. And not terribly original ones at that, as anyone who's waded through the incessant belly-aching at Gothamist.com can attest.
