Quote-leftI absolutely love R.A. Salvatore. His writing is fun and compelling. I have read pretty much all of his books in the Forgotten Realms setting. Having said that, our heroes are really starting to get whiny at this point. I've heard entirely too much lamenting over living the adventurer's lifestyle and having to fear for your friends constantly. And how on God's green Earth does one pronounce Catti-Brie? And what horrible atrocity in Salvatore's youth lead him believe that a hillbilly accent is attractive in a woman? And what about the Dwarf named Dagnabbit... seriously... his name is Dagnabbit? And what about at the end of the series, when we thought he was finally going to kill a major character off... Regis magically 'persuades' Bruenor's soul back from the underworld?

I don't mean to complain (at least not seriously), but some of this can really break the otherwise brilliant spell cast by Salvatore's books.

In spite of all this, I think this series was a great read. I always love Salvatore's style, and I enjoy most of his major characters as well. If you like fantasy, you will likely love all of Salvatore's work, including this series.Quote-right

Quote-leftMy first Drizzt trilogy, I'm finding R.A. Salvatore's writing is everything it's been rumoured to be. A fine read.Quote-right

Quote-leftFinally!!! The heros are reunited and on to they're next adventure as a whole. A small group of drow elves living above ground are uniting the orcs, golblins and frost giants against the dwarves and surrounding small towns. Bruenor makes a visit to the rival and competing dwarf town of Mirabar, which causes a civil war with the dwarves living there. On they're way home to Mithral Hall for the coronation of King Bruenor Battlehammer, the heros decide on one last adventure, and are off to protect the surrounding towns and find one completely destroyed. Cattie-Brie comes to question her relationship with Drizzt. Regis finds that he is isolated and not part of the group of heros. Bruenor can't face being stuck in Mithral Hall and no more adventures. Drizzt finds himself all alone.Quote-right

Quote-leftSalavatore does it again, but with a twist: Drizzt is alone. The character development is always intriguing.Quote-right

Quote-leftSome fun fight scenes and spots of humor - I particularly love the Bouldershoulder brothers - but there was absolutely no character development at all. I had no empathy with any of them whatsoever, and had no grasp of their motivations and emotions.Quote-right

Quote-leftTypical Salvatore - a good story, if you like a bit of blood and guts - nothing all that deep though. Good book to take on holiday!Quote-right

Quote-leftSigh ... were I stopped reading the series ... a very dissapointing book ... I never could understand how from the deep and very well thought "Servant of the shard" we came to this one sided and quite simplistic book ...

When you spot logical irregularities in a book and start wondering "what the hell were the characters thinking ?" from page to page, this is where you know that the book has large problems ...

I do not suggest reading it.Quote-right

Quote-leftI thought this was well written and can't wait to read the next two in the series! Salvatore weaves together many storylines and I was genuinely surprised at how well all the various character paths ended up converting towards the end. Brilliant.Quote-right

Quote-leftThis was the very first R.A. Salvatore book I picked up, and I've been glad that I did ever since! I wasn't familiar with the cast of characters and their backgrounds, but I was still sucked into their world. It was a very entertaining series, but I haven't decided to read the rest of Drizzt's adventures at this time. However, I'd still recommend it to anyone thats a fan of the genre.Quote-right
