The Army's evidence against Sergeant EllisCooper, a decorated Vietnam vet, is overwhelming, which isn't surprising sinceit's all been planted by a quartet of killers whose reason for framing theerstwhile hero isn't revealed until long after they are. The big secret is whoset the murderers loose, and in true cliffhanger fashion, Patterson keeps itunder wraps until the very end. Meanwhile, his usual blend of action, violence, fast pacing and uninspired-though-serviceable prose prevail, and will probablydo so all the way to the top of the bestseller lists. --Jane Adams (show less)

It's a hit!

This is a good book! I love James Patterson novels anyway. I really hate how it ends so abruptly, but a very good book!

Do people really read this garbage? I got this as an audiobook, mainly because I could listen to Michael Emerson talk all day long. But this book is terrible, the writing is banal and profoundly uninteresting. I ended up going to Wikipedia to see how it ended because I couldn't wade through the insipid prose and tired storyline any more. I don't understand how this hack sells any books at all. Are readers really so jaded that this bland role-call of cliche's is all they expect from literature? I am disgusted and offended by this utter, utter waste of paper/hard drive space. (show less)

This was just an average Alex Cross novel. It's interesting enough to keep you intrigued and reading but that's not to say it is without it's flaws.

One thing is that it's awfully repetitive at times. I don't know how many times they mentioned how Nana Mama is like a mother to Sampson. They mention it at least four times in this book alone.

Another major flaw is that Alex Cross is suppose to be a really smart character but yet he does some really stupid things. A lot of problems would have been solved he if only brought a cell phone or brought some back up.

Patterson is suffering from the same problem as M. Night Shyamalan, where people are expecting some twist at the end. So you're partly expecting and as a result the twists seemed forced. It's too bad he didn't write more like a Thomas Harris novel where the villain isn't a mystery.

With that being said, James Patterson is still a solid writer and one of the more interesting voices in the mystery genre. The storyline it's self is good and the Three Blind Mice are solid villains. It's also nice that Patterson added a bit more depth to Sampson.

Overall, a solid entry in the Alex Cross saga. (show less)

  • Good story in the Alex Cross series. Not sure if it's "movie worthy", but a good thriller.

Alex Cross's partner has asked for help with an old Army buddy, a Sergeant, a decorated Vietnam vet, facing execution for a spree of horrible murders. He may or may not be innocent. Can Cross solve the cases in time?

Alex Cross books are really good when listening to the Audio version. There's usually 2 different readers: one for Alex Cross and the good guys, another for the bad guys. This one was particularly creepy for me as the bad-guy-reader was Michael Emerson, aka Benjamin Linus from "LOST"! (show less)
