A Song for Arbonne is Guy Gavriel Kay’s critically acclaimed fantasy of love, both courtly and forbidden, and of kingdoms endlessly opposed—one dominated by male rulers and their male god, the other guided by women and their goddess.

This was my second dive into the world of GGK. I found the first couple of chapters a tad dry and had to remind myself of how much I enjoyed the last book I read and to plug on. I am so glad I did! Only seconds after meeting the main character, I was hooked.
There are so many layers in this story, pasts hinted at but never fully divulged, secrets kept, lies told, and so many great characters to follow. At times I felt I was being left behind, as the characters figured things out that I didn't know about yet.
I was up until 3 in the morning finishing this story, and it was worth every second of lost sleep! (show less)

  • Guy Gavriel Kay is my favourite author, any genre. The first GGK book I read was The Summer Tree, and I thought it and the rest of the Tapestry were average quality fantasies, but nothing special. A few months later I read Tigana and decided it was 'yucky' (the exact words in my reading journal)! To be fair, I was 10 years old and David Eddings was my favourite author. Five years and many novels later I saw the Tapestry in a library and decided to give it another go - and I'm very glad I did!... (show more)

I now own, and love, all the books, and so when it was time to start thinking about my undergrad dissertation, GGK was the obvious choice. The specific topic, not so much - which is why my dissertation has its own thread in the forums at www.brightweavings.com. (show less)

When I first started reading this book, I hated most of the characters, and the social decadence of arbonne. If not for the main character drawing me into the story, I would have stopped reading it before the end of Chapter 2. When I first started reading this book, I hated most of the characters, and the social decadence of arbonne. If not for the main character drawing me into the story, I would have stopped reading it before the end of Chapter 2. What was really great about this book, and what makes it one of my most favourite stories is that it forced me to see beyond my personal prejudice and grow from what I believed.
In the country arbonne, where the people seem to lack moral fiber, and adultery is fashionable, it makes sense when marriage is political and not by choice. All the characters are flawed making them more really and this was one of the first fantasy stories I have read where it was not about monsters and fairies or magic and spells or good triumphing over evil. It is a story about the clashing of different culture and beliefs, about things that very human, and very real, that is lacking in most stories.
I read this book over ten years ago and it still reminds me to be open minded to others and to look beyond myself. It helped shape the way I view the world around me. You can take any book, movie, story and summit up in a few words and then move
on, or you can look deeper and grow from it. This is not one of those books that you can just flip through the pages and say it was good, it was bad, you really have to pay attention to it to really appreciate it.
Guy Gavriel Kay is one of those rare great writers, although he has not written may books, what he has writes is worth reading. (show less)
