No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II
Doris Kearns Goodwin
No Ordinary Time is a monumental work, a brilliantly conceived chronicle of one of the most vibrant and revolutionary periods in the history of the United States. With an extraordinary collection of details, Goodwin masterfully weaves together a striking number of story lines--Eleanor and Franklin's marriage and remarkable partnership, Eleanor's life as First Lady, and FDR's White House and its impact on America as well as on a world at war. One of my all time favorite books. Doris Kearns Goodwin writes historically without being a total bore. Her detailed account of the Great Depression and America's struggle to pull out of that and fight a war on two fronts is gripping and spot on. Loved it!
Reads more like a novel than a biography. Fascinating and a good read....especially if you enjoy history like I do!
I so appreciate authors like Goodwin and McCullough who manage to give you so much information but make it go down so easily. Truly an education.
This book is very enlightening regarding our country - racial issues, women's issues, international relations, and particularly the U.S. economy. Wow. It's easy to see why it is a Pulitzer Prize winner - meticulously researched, and so well written you don't want to put it down.
Doris Kearns Goodwin proves herself as an exemplary presidential biographer in "No Ordinary Time." The details in which she portrays the complex machine that was the FDR reign are her labor of love, as she spent years meticulously researching before penning this well-written, compelling, narrative that shines plenty of light on a man whose truths (such as being wheelchair bound by polio) were often hidden from a pre-TV public. The story of the Great Depression, FDR's ingenious cabinet appointments and think-tank style of decision making that pulled us from debt and led us into war is fascinating and gripping throughout every chapter.
I never thought history could be as interesting as Goodwin makes it. So timely right now as the role of FDR in the economic recovery is being scrutinized. EXCELLENT read.
This is a brilliant, eye opening book that is worth reading (or rereading) in view of our current political and economic situation.
This time in history fascinates me to start with. This gave a truly interesting perspective on their lives together and seperately. It just grabbed hold of me and would not let go.
Very interesting history of a period during President Roosevelt's term and touching on aspects of his relationship with his wife and other women in his life who were important. The book focuses on his relationship with his wife Eleanor and the events the encircled their lives and the effects of these events on their relationship. I loved this partly due to my having been born in 1942 and having early memories of the end of the war and the people in my life: my dad, grandfather and others, who thought of President Roosevelt as a hero and were lifelong Democrats based on his influence.
Just amazing! A page turning, informative, personal portrait of two great people and the ways extraordinary circumstances impacted their personal lives.
