The Confessions of St. Augustine (Signet Classics)

Fascinating and at times exhausting. It seems to show a kind of light, into my thinking at least. One pithy statement deserves particular reflection: 'Evil is nothing but the privation of good.' I just finished, so the marvelous allegory of creation is also still fresh in my mind.
As far as translations go, this one [Rex Warner] seemed clear, concise and balanced to me.
it is the first spiritual autobiography in Christianity. It also is one of the greatest books written in the time of antiquity . it is the perfect place to start to understand how Christianityowes so much to what it believe to him .also the world owes him a great debt because he is the father of modern history perspective .
"But Salvation is far from sinners, and such was I at that time but little by little I was growing closer to you though I did not know it."
the copy i read was an old version from 1963 -- a mentor-omega book -- "in a vivid contemporary translation by Rex Warner". it was already with the old house books because my dad said he read it in college. i finally read it myself just for fun last year. i almost felt kinda guilty reading his confession. it is quite different than reading St. Therese of Lisieux's Story of a Soul. they are dis-similar saints. i'd rather follow St. Therese's Little Way :) but isn't the Carmelite rule based on the rule of St. Augustine? i'm not sure.
I know it's an important book, and I did enjoy it, but I don't recommend reading it in a longue chair at a hotel pool.
I got this book because I felt it might speak to me where I am. It grabbed me at page one. I recommend this to anyone who wants to deepend their spiritual life. And it's not something to be gulped down in one sitting, but savored, one sentence at a time.
Augustine was the MAN! This book chronicles his journey from sinner to Saint. Very personal and written as journal entries and private prayers.
Phenomenal book!
