This is a completely new translation of one of the great works of Western political thought. In addition to Tom Griffith's vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, this edition is suitable for students at all levels. Quote-leftVery simply, an amazing must read for anyone that would like to know a bit about the backbone of Western thought. Maybe I'm a bit of a geek but I even found a few points to laugh at in Plato. And to think that I used to believe this to be dry material.Quote-right

Quote-leftThis book really leaps out for how fiercely modern it is. Plato is the ultimate right-winger who thinks that even children's fairy tales need to be vetted to make sure they are not effeminate in their support for heroism and the state.Quote-right

Quote-leftRead this as an undergraduate. Everything went in through my eyes, and went out of my bottom. Should read this again perhaps.Quote-right

Quote-leftThis really is one the fundamental works of Western thought. Read this, and you can almost skip the next thousand years of philosophy.Quote-right

Quote-leftPlato's Republic is a book that should be read over and over, for each time the reader gains new insight into Plato's meaning. It becomes more like a conversation with the text than merely a reading of a book. While I may agree on some points and disagree on others, the real point is it makes me respond. Very insightful - especially Book VII - The Allegory of the Cave, which may be applied to so many oppressed cultures today.Quote-right

Quote-leftImportant read for historical perspective but clearly in advocacy of what today's world would brand a technocratic brand of fascism.Quote-right

Quote-leftI don't know if I completely agree with everything the character of Socrates puts forth in this book but it is clear that this work has been pivotal in shaping Western civilization. It makes you think, that's for sure.Quote-right

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey. According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. more
