This is a completely new translation of one of the great works of Western political thought. In addition to Tom Griffith's vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, this edition is suitable for students at all levels. It contains an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the text; an analytical summary of content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of impo... Very simply, an amazing must read for anyone that would like to know a bit about the backbone of Western thought. Maybe I'm a bit of a geek but I even found a few points to laugh at in Plato. And to think that I used to believe this to be dry material.
...and we're like the people chained up in the cave in the allegory of the people in the cave by the greek guy. Thank you, TMBG
This book really leaps out for how fiercely modern it is. Plato is the ultimate right-winger who thinks that even children's fairy tales need to be vetted to make sure they are not effeminate in their support for heroism and the state.
This is another work that should be required reading in highschool. It make take some consentration but a must
Read this as an undergraduate. Everything went in through my eyes, and went out of my bottom. Should read this again perhaps.
This really is one the fundamental works of Western thought. Read this, and you can almost skip the next thousand years of philosophy.
Plato's Republic is a book that should be read over and over, for each time the reader gains new insight into Plato's meaning. It becomes more like a conversation with the text than merely a reading of a book. While I may agree on some points and disagree on others, the real point is it makes me respond. Very insightful - especially Book VII - The Allegory of the Cave, which may be applied to so many oppressed cultures today.
Important read for historical perspective but clearly in advocacy of what today's world would brand a technocratic brand of fascism.
It was an incredible discussion of Justice and Virtue- what does it mean to be good and just-- Oh my goodness and incredible look into the nature of man.
I don't know if I completely agree with everything the character of Socrates puts forth in this book but it is clear that this work has been pivotal in shaping Western civilization. It makes you think, that's for sure.
