Amazing Books. Will take you to a world that is beyond yourself. Eye Opening
Wonderful series. While the final book is not quite the match of the opening two, the phiisophical ideas and the humane qualities make these books essential. Anything described as "Fit for the bonfire" by the Catholic Herald deserves your attention.
Simply amazing. The first book is, for me, the weakest of the three, but still a good book. It's obviously the setting up book and puts a lot of things into play. Book 2 is where it really kicks into gear and The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass just flow together very well. The mythology is excellent and the ending is just heart breaking.
Don't be fooled by the explicit argument, the subtones of the trilogy are very deep. Wether you have your faith or not, it worths the risk reading the books.
And they are very funny too.
*spoiler warning* Captivating read. I especially enjoyed the first two books. The third book glossed over a lot of information at once - I think several things could have used more explanation - Lord Asriel's fortress, the nature of angels, the death of the Authority, etc. I don't agree with the allegory - that there is no God, only an authority who demands obeisance, etc. - but I resonate with a lot of the things Pullman is trying to expose - like any organization that oppresses instead of encourages knowledge - which seemed to be a recurring theme. The Adam & Eve comparison didn't make sense to me, but the trilogy is VERY CREATIVE. I think it's a neat world/s, and an interesting interpolation of ideas.
Holy Crap, the most amazing series ever!!! So much better than Harry Potter ever will be. lol!
In chapter 24 of the 3rd book ("The Amber Spyglass" pg 293-294) Mrs. Coulter askes Father MacPhail questions regarding God. It pained my soul to read those few paragraphs because it's an inacurate description of God. If the author truely understood the nature of God, he would speak of Him with greater reverance.
I know that God created all things. He is the Father of our spirits & we are made in his image. God has an immortal body. I know that he hears me when I pray to him and He stands ready to give me comfort, peace, and guidance in my life. For more information, visit: www.mormon.org
Slow in the beginning, but picks up halfway through the Golden Compass and doesn't let you go until some chapters from the end of the Amber SPyglass.
Beginning and end of the series are slow, but everything else is very good.
Great young adult literature. Change that. Great literature that young adults can read and enjoy too. Don't be fooled into thinking His Dark Materials is kiddie lit, it's much too, well, big for that. A page turner that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading.
