Short but wonderful... and while flying to Malawi, I was on a plane not too different from the one he describes... and having read his account before that flight added a new dimension all its own.
So short, it felt more like a long essay than a "book", but is still vintage Bryson filled with vry and humorous observations. You'll feel like you're there, if only for a short while.
This is a lovely read. I always enjoy Bryson's wry and self-deprecating sense of humor, and this short diary of his humanitarian visit to Kenya conveys the extreme poverty and desperate living conditions of the Nairobi slums with compassion but not with saccharine. Well worth reading.
An intresting account of Bryson's eight day trip to Kenya to see the work of Care International. All the proceeds of the book go to the charity which is working around the world to help people in developing countries improve their lives. The book although serious in nature has smatterings of Bryson's trademark humour and does paint a picture of a beautiful country as well as the harsh realities of life in the slums. A very worthwhile purchase if a little too short.
This is the smallest book Bryson has written but it taught a big lesson....the world can't be fixed sometimes yet we try, sigh, and hope maybe.
very small but worth it as its all for charity, the flight and the poo slinging kids made me lol for real
browsed through only shortly, but it is a book whose revenue entirely is donated to charity, a good thing, I believe
This wasn't Bill Bryson best book. It was insteresting but too short. If you want to read a better book of his then, read A Sunburned Country.

The phrase short and sweet popped into my mind about this 49 page little book about Bill Bryson’s 8 days in Kenya. It is actually a bitter sweet account about the work of the charity organization CARE one of the worlds leading international organizations fighting against poverty. They believe that by working to find the source of a communities problems and solving it they can help make the world a safer and more stable place for us all.
Unfortunately the book is a very superficial glance into the problems that are facing Kenya poverty, war, disease and corruption. However it did its job reminding me that we should be grateful for the small things in life and appreciate the fact that there are millions of people in Africa lacking even the basics for survival.
Sat reading this while Sian had her college interview. As usual crying with laughter, though some pretty sobering facts.
