Phillip is excited when the Germans invade the small island of Curaçao. War has always been a game to him, and he’s eager to glimpse it firsthand–until the freighter he and his mother are traveling to the United States on is torpedoed.

When Phillip comes to, he is on a small raft in the middle of the sea. Besides Stew Cat, his only companion is an old West Indian, Timothy. Phillip remembers his mother’s warning about black people: “They are different, and they live differently.”

But by the time the castaways arrive on a small island, Phillip’s head injury has made him blind and dependent on Timothy.

Quote-leftAn oldie but a goodie! The story of two people who are shipwrecked on a deserted cay. Phillip is a twelve year old white American school boy and Timothy is a black seaman who is about seventy or so. Timothy is a gracious teacher who teaches Phillip the survival skills he will need if he dies, which he does. Phillip however, is not always a willing student.Quote-right

Quote-leftRobinson Crusoe for kids but quite gripping and may still resonate given universally understandable predicament and well drawn two central characters. Even combats racism.Quote-right

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey. According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. more
