Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness Modern History from the Sports Desk
Hunter S. Thompson
SPORTS, POLITICS, AND SEX COLLIDE IN HUNTER S. THOMPSON'S WILDLY POPULAR ESPN.COM COLUMNS.
Insightful, incendiary, outrageously brilliant, such was the man who galvanized American journalism with his radical ideas and gonzo tactics. For over half a century, Hunter S. Thompson devastated his readers with his acerbic wit and uncanny grasp of politics and history. His reign as "The Unabomber of contemporary letters" (Time) is more legendary than ever with Hey Rube. Fear, greed, and action abou... (show more)

Oddly, I am not a sports fan. And altough Hunter loved his sports and his gambling- he wrote about the things that made me actually care to read the lines in a "sports" book/column. He's a god.
If you love sports and politics and often times think they are pretty similar then this will make you happy a lot. As a lifelong Hunter fan, I was often sad, knowing he had already passed. A fitting capstone to a remarkable career if ya ask me. And asking me is the smartest thing anyone has done...
Certainly not his best work, but still a nice read before sleep..the story with his neighbor as very funny indeed . Still not in the likes on The Great Shark Hunt .
This was hard to read, simply because reading Hunter's reactions and thoughts, after 9/11, was like opening a still-healing wound. Good book.
It was interesting reading HST's writings about events that I had actually experienced, being as his most famous works are more than 35 years old. Not as good as his best, but certainly not his worst.
HST's sports writing from ESPN's Page 2. More contemporary HST for those of you wanting something new, something where you can see the way HST viewed the things you saw. More than sports - politics, social issues, gambling and just about anything else.
Not too shabby. :) Interesting mix of politics and sports; considering I have zero interest in most sports, the fact that I read this book and enjoyed it says a lot about the caliber of Thompson's writing. His writing will be sorely missed.
One of HST's last books, it's a compilation of his sports articles for ESPN and political articles for Rolling Stone written in the final years of his life. Not as great as his earlier works but still at times crackles with Thompson's gonzo style, razor-sharp wit and keen observations of American life under George W. Bush.
This one is only recommended for the die-hard fan. While there are better collections, this is the final published work of the great Gonzo journalist. I guess someone else will have to gnaw on Their skulls...
Not my favorite Thompson book, but I didn't think it would be going into it. It's mostly about sports, but the fact that he kept me reading all the way to the end has to count for something.
