The most disastrous family reunion in the history of fiction. The Drummond family, reunited for the first time in years, has gathered near Cape Canaveral to watch the launch into space of their beloved daughter and sister, Sarah. The most disastrous family reunion in the history of fiction. The Drummond family, reunited for the first time in years, has gathered near Cape Canaveral to watch the launch into space of their beloved daughter and sister, Sarah. Against the Technicolor unreality of Florida's finest tourist attractions, the Drummonds stumble into every illicit activity under the tropical sun-kidnapping, blackmail, gunplay, and black market negotiations, to name a few. But even as the Drummonds' lives spin out of control, Coupland reminds us of their humanity at every turn, hammering out a hilarious masterpiece with the keen eye of a cultural critic and the heart and soul of a gifted storyteller. He tells not only the characters' stories but also the story of our times--thalidomide, AIDS, born-again Christianity, drugs, divorce, the Internet-all bound together with the familiar glue of family love and madness. Quote-leftI think this might be my favorite Copeland yet. Although, Microserfs was pretty dang good. This one was more outrageous and had more laugh out loud moments and just as many random character musings. Loved it.Quote-right

Quote-leftI like for example JPod by Coupland better, but this wasn't too bad. And most important - it wasn't sane neither!

I really like these kind of sick stories with all sarcasm but still honesty. It is like even if most people would say novels like this are just full of crap (fun crap), I would say they also come with messages from the author as well.

Interesting to analyze!Quote-right

Quote-leftInteresting characters. Tragedy is everywhere. The ending is a bit of a cop out as well. But, it's good to have a happy ending I guess.Quote-right

Quote-leftVibrant, animated and out of control. This novel could have been created from a paranoid stoner's dream. A great read!Quote-right

Quote-leftAs usual, Douglas Coupland's work does not disappoint. The characters brought to life in this novel are reminiscent of anybody's family members. I highly recommend this book.Quote-right

Quote-leftCoupland creates the most fantastical characters and scenarios in his literature. The Drummond Family makes you want to scream at times due to their incredible amount of follies. The fact that Ted (the father) had a drug problem and left his wife of many years for a trophy wife and then shot their son for sleeping with his new wife which only in turn led to giving his ex-wife (Janet, the matriarch) HIV. Whew! That makes me feel nauseated just thinking about it.

I won't spoil the rest of the screwed-upness that centers around the Drummods. The creepy thing that dawned on me is that this isn't too far fetched from being a typical American Family nowadays.Quote-right

Quote-leftReminded me so much of my own family, what with all the baby selling, high speed car crashes, and NASSA space launches.
A really cool example of non-linear story telling, where every strand is neatly tied up.Quote-right

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey. According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. more
