Every little girl has dreams of being swept up into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are often swept up into a life filled merely with duty and demands. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, or a capable home manager.

What Wild at Heart did for men, Captivating can do for women. This groundbreaking book shows readers the glorious design of women before the fall, describes how the feminine heart can be restored, and casts a vision for the power, freedom, and beauty of a woman released to be all she was meant to be. By revealing the core desires every woman shares-to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a grand adventure, and to unveil beauty-John and Stasi Eldredge invite women to recover their feminine hearts, created in the image of an intimate and passionate God. Further, they encourage men to discover the secret of a woman's soul and to delight in the beauty and strength women were created to offer.

Overall this was a very insightful book to read. While I certainly didn't and don't agree with a lot of things expressed by the married couple who co-wrote this together, there were just as many things that hit very close to home for me. Likewise, I didn't quite like the evangelical direction and tone the taken by the book and its two authors in certain areas and parts of it.

Those two things aside though, I would definitely recommend as serious reading material any woman to regardless of where you stand in regards to religion. Probably the best thing is that it is a VERY easy read. Additionally, while you may or may not agree with some, most, or anything about what is discussed in it, it may very well provide some great insight as to where you possibly are right now emotionally, mentally, and physically in your life.

It certainly provided interesting insight for myself. (show less)

I can see what the authors were trying to do with this book, but I found it very disappointing. A lot of the book is based on personal experiences, not biblical study, which causes it to be quite lacking in many ways. I started reading this for a small group and we all disliked the book so much that we didn't finish it, though I was determined to finish later. There is a lot of filler to make the book longer and almost none of the movie references the authors are so fond of made any sense to me because they're old movies I haven't seen. I do not recommend this book, either for group study or for individual reading. There are plenty of better options out there if you want to understand God's plan for you as a woman. The reading is easy enough, not too technical, but I still recommend that those looking for a Christian and biblically guided perspective of being a woman don't bother. (show less)

Recommend this one to all my girlfriends out there. Does a wonderful job of describing the longing of your heart, as a woman, and how that longing is meant to be fulfilled through your love relationship with Jesus your Lord. Recommend this one to all my girlfriends out there. Does a wonderful job of describing the longing of your heart, as a woman, and how that longing is meant to be fulfilled through your love relationship with Jesus your Lord. There is a moving section that describes God's creation of Eve. I don't know Greek or Hebrew, but apparently the word that tells us that God created Eve to be a "help meet" or "companion" for Adam is the phrase ezer kenegdo. The "ezer" is only used 20 other times in the OT and each time it is referring to God Himself coming through for His people in a desperate, life or death situation. The "kenegdo" means counterpart. So Eve was created to fill a desperate need. Think Arwen as she rides with Frodo to save his life after he is poisoned by the blade of the wraith (The author's illustration--I didn't think that one up!) Lots of good stuff here... about being a wife, a mother, a friend... If you despair as a stay-at-home mom, there is a tremendous section on the incredible value of this mighty calling.

It took me awhile to read this one, as it had lots of food for thought.
