First published in 1985, The Cider House Rules is John Irving's sixth novel. Set in rural Maine in the first half of this century, it tells the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch--saint and obstetrician, founder and director of the orphanage in the town of St. Cloud's, ether addict and abortionist. It is also the story of Dr. Larch's favorite orphan, Homer Wells, who is never adopted.

that's why i love john irving so much. all his characters are so real i find myself thinking about them and missing them all
After I read this book, I was driving one day and I thought "I wonder what Homer is up to?" And then I remembered, he was fictional, and I had finished the book and I missed my friend, fictional or not.
john irving is a great writer, and i loved this book most! it's got everything in it - the search for the own identity, the struggle for love, friendship and dignity in a realistic world. and by the way, it really is entertaining...!
Yksinäiseksi itseään luuleva orpo Homer saa monta perhettä. Lisä-ällöttävyyttä 1800-luvun aborttikuvauksista. Suosittelemme sisäelimistä kiinnostuneille ja tuleville omenafarmareille.
Such a beautifully written story... Casts empathy and neccesity on the controversial subject of abortion, while telling the incredible tale of Homer Wells, and his devotion to never break a promise, except to himself.
hmmm ... what to say. It was a good story but hard work to get though. Liked A Prayer for Owen Meany much much more.
Loved the book. Loved the movie version as well. Michael Caine was awesome. Addresses the concept of abortion, a difficult subject but a fascinating one.
I love this book. I've read it several times. It's a charming and interesting story. One of my favorite books.
My single favorite book of all time. The film (while acceptable) doesn't come close to the pure Truth that this book expresses: Relativism our only universal.
This is a great read and should make anyone second guess that abortion is a black and white issue. It tenderly reveals the messiness of very vulnerable people and relationships and the importance of community.
