By far, the best of the series, finally in stride after the first two that had been overly edited. Very compelling, particularly the bishops and the invading Wencit. Really, really clunky writing in a number of spots -- heavy handed foreshadowing and redescription of things already detailed -- and a bit of a cop-out ending. I probably won't bother with anything else this author has written.
Kelson Haldane is less then a year into his reign as king of Gwennedd when he is faced with war on three fronts. All three wars can be traced to his own Deryni blood, revealed at his coronation, and his support for his two half-deryni allies, Alaric Morgan and Duncan MacLean. There is a civil war, led by the anti-deryni fanatic Warin De Grey, ecclesiatical war, led by the equally fanatically anti-deryni archbishop Edmond Loris, and war with a rival kingdom, ruled by the deryni, Wencit of Torenth. Now a new group, the mysterious Camberian council, a group of high powered full Deryni have become interested in Morgan and MacLean, an interest that may prove fatal for the two and ultimatly for Kelson. A worthy end for Katherine kurtz's original trilogy, now re-released after thirty years.
