Deliciously sensuous and fascinating, Robb renders in vivid detail the intoxicating pleasures of Brazil’s food, music, literature, and landscape as he travels not only cross country but also back in time—from the days of slavery to modern day political intrigue and murder. Spellbinding and revelatory, Peter Robb paints a multi-layered portrait of Brazil as a country of intoxicating and passionate extremes.

This is a very well written book. It gives the reader great insight on how the Brazilian political system has become what it has today.
Fantastically written and insightful perspective on the history and social fabric of Brazil, from a hard-drinking Australian nomad.
An interesting interweaving of Brazil's "settled" history with politics and culture of the late 20th century.
Um bom livro pra quem quer entender sobre a historia da corrupcao brasileira...digo sobre a historia brasileira.
This book may be one of the best books I've read. He masterfully weaves history into his personal experiences. The book becomes addictive and a pleasure.
The real deal on Brazil; itr was like reading about my life in Sao Paulo. Read this and then see City Of God!
This book makes Brazilian culture and politics more familiar, all the while shading the country with darkness and danger. A good read.
Great story of the Brazilian corruption. There are stories to relate all the president until Lula to be involved in all sorts of criminalities including slavery.
Good general books on Brazil are hard to find in English. This is a great introduction to it's culture and history. France's ambassador to Brazil famously said: "Brazil is not a serious country." After reading this, I'm not so sure.
