Enormously visceral, emotionally gripping, and imbued with the belief that justice is possible even after the most horrific of crimes, Alice Sebold's compelling memoir of her rape at the age of eighteen is a story that takes hold of you and won't let go.
Sebold fulfills a promise that she made to herself in the very tunnel where she was raped: someday she would write a book about her experience. With Lucky she delivers on that promise with mordant wit and an eye for life's absurdities, as sh... (show more)

I did not want to read this book.
I forced myself to read this book.
This was a good thing.
Read it, notice the difference between Alice and Lila, and don't forget it.
A very important book and definately a book everyone should be aware of if they have not read it.
The first three chapters drew me to tears and the afterward was heartbreaking. This definately made it into my list of favorite books, both for its important and vital material and the way it was written
not a pleasant read, but an important one ... i thought her courage in the face of adversity was amazing.
omg this is such an emotional book. to know that this actually happened to someone is wow. I really like this book!
Very good. It dragged a bit right after the account of the trial and conviction, but picked up again and ended well. Sad in places, but true and told with a kind of black humor
This was an AMAZING book. What more can I say? One line near the end of it really hit home:
"I wanted to be better but I didn't know how."
Knowing that this is a memoir of the author's rape and aftermath, I had to force myself to plod through the first chapter which is difficult to read. She writes her story well, pulling together the impressions made by her parents and sister; her close friends and boyfriends at college and ultimately the rapist himself to reveal her inner core strength and mettle which is the climax of the book.
Great book about what is a most horrific subject matter. You can't help but cry and in a sense feel like you (in a very small way) suffer along with Alice thru her description of not only the rape, but each and every event which occurs afterwards. Thank you for writing such a wonderful gift for women everywhere and showing us we can survive!
I could hardly put this down.....all I can say to all women who have been through this.....Understood
This is a memoir written by Alice Sebold recounting her rape and how she dealt with it. It's a very powerful story and one that I would definitely recommend reading.
