The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

The Master and Margarita

Surely no stranger work exists in the annals of protest literature than The Master and Margarita. Written during the Soviet crackdown of the 1930s, when Mikhail Bulgakov's works were effectively banned, it wraps its anti-Stalinist message in a complex allegory of good and evil. Quote-leftA masterpiece in the satire genre by Bulgakov. Wonderful humour, yet very serious. No clear line between fantasy and fiction. A must-read for all!Quote-right

Quote-leftplays out like a studio gibli film in my head, as i read.
the word play is very clever and fun.
the 'hippopotamus' cat made me lose my shit.
seriously - thought the cat was the best thing ever.

that being said - book stretched out a tad too much for me and i got a little bored.
in all honesty, if i read it in russian, would probably have not cared about that.
was probably less gripping due to translation... as always.Quote-right

Quote-leftOk, maybe this book was just overly hyped to me before I read it, but I was expecting to be blown away and frankly was not. You practically have to have a degree in Russian history to get all the references, even with the (pretty decent) footnotes provided. I usually like this type of literature but for some reason this one left me a bit lukewarm. (Heresy, I know.) I liked it; I just didn't LOVE it.Quote-right

Quote-leftIt's a soviet satires directed against a bureaucracy and hypocrisy. It's a fun one! but it needs an extensive analyzation.Quote-right
