A richly evocative novel that portrays an astutely imagined relationship between Europe's greatest philosopher and one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis.

If you are interested in psychoanalysis, the fin de siecle in Vienna or a window into the minds of some of the greatest thinkers in modern Western thought, you should definitely read this book. It is historical fiction at its intellectual finest, delving into the deepest thoughts of such greats as Friedrich Nietzsche, Josef Breur, Sigmund Freud and Lou Salome. Not by any stretch of the imagination a light read, but a thoughtful and creative look into the birth of psychoanalysis and the struggle with Existenz that faced the world at the time and both helped birth one of the most important mind therapies and also one of the great Western philosophical movements, Existentialism. Again this is heady, but if you are interested in any of the above. worth the read. (show less)

This is, I believe, his best "Literary" work, where he manages to free himself from the gentle didacticism of his metier and give the breath of life , at least to his two main characters. Therefore it works quite well as a novel and sucesfully incorporates Yalom's life wisdom, too
