Aside from the big picture (i.e., deer demise) this is a very good book! Well written, descriptive, you can almost hear the crunch of leaves in the forest. I loved the descriptions of the boy's thoughts and feelings. This is not a deep book, but it was a rewarding and heartfelt read. |

I have never been able to get past the first chapter of this book! And I've been trying to read it sincce I was 11! I just know there's going to be some sad death of the little deer and I just can't bring myself to finish such a thing. I struggled through Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Pony all those dying animal weepies. Just tell me--does the deer die in some horrible fashion? Does the kid have to wear shoes made out of its hide? |

I so hated reading this stupid ass book in school. I come from a deer hunting family and the whole time I was like.. Come on you wuss, kill the stupid thing (and FLAG? what kind of a name is THAT?) and let's have venison burgers. I despise this book. |

This is an underrated book. The best thing about it is not so much the plot--though it is good-- but the vivid descriptions of life in the Florida swamps around the turn of the 20th century. It is a world that is gone, and Rawlings, who lived there, captured it like a snapshot of a time and place we can never go. It is based on a true story about one of Rawlings' Cross Creek neighbors. |

I remember this being one of the first books I loved when I learned English. The descpritions of the swamp still bring vivid memories to mind. |
