Joe Jones: A Novel
JOE JONES is Anne Lamott’s raucous novel of lives gathered around Jessie’s Café, "the sort of broken-down waterfront dive one might expect to find in Steinbeck." I really enjoy Lamott's writing and she is certainly able to create mood and detail and emotion. The problem I had with this was that the neurosis was forced, the book was predictable, and it made me think that she is just writing the same book over and over again. She's really good at one thing, which I do appreciate, but it would be nice to read something from her that is not about a group of neurotic, imperfect-but-well-meaning, emotionally clumsy, misfit post-modern hippies in the Bay area.

I love Anne Lamott. Upon completion of Joe Jones, I felt like I just parted with a wonderful group of friends. The story is simple, but the impact reverberates. Joe Jones is a rich tale of imperfect people who thrive through their connections to one another. This is an appreciative novel. Lamott does not ignore sorrow, but instead envelopes it in a story about the power of friendship.
