JOE JONES is Anne Lamott’s raucous novel of lives gathered around Jessie’s Café, "the sort of broken-down waterfront dive one might expect to find in Steinbeck." Jessie, "thin, stooped and gorgeous at seventy-nine," inherited the café years before and it has become home to a remarkable family of characters: Louise, the cook and vortex, Joe, devoted and unfaithful; Willie, Jessie’s gay grandson; Georgia, an empress dowager who never speaks; and a dozen others all living together in the sweet e... Any book by Anne LaMott is worth reading. This was not her strongest work, but it got better as I got further into it. It really lacked good editing, and is not my favorite of her fictional works. (show less)

I just can't get into this author. There ios something about her writing style that just doesn't work for me. I quit!!!! I couldn't even get through the first chapter and I usually give a book 3 chapters to pull me in. (show less)

  • I really enjoy Lamott's writing and she is certainly able to create mood and detail and emotion. The problem I had with this was that the neurosis was forced, the book was predictable, and it made me think that she is just writing the same book over and over again. She's really good at one thing, which I do appreciate, but it would be nice to read something from her that is not about a group of neurotic, imperfect-but-well-meaning, emotionally clumsy, misfit post-modern hippies in the Bay area.

I love Anne Lamott. Upon completion of Joe Jones, I felt like I just parted with a wonderful group of friends. The story is simple, but the impact reverberates. Joe Jones is a rich tale of imperfect people who thrive through their connections to one another. This is an appreciative novel. Lamott does not ignore sorrow, but instead envelopes it in a story about the power of friendship.
