So Nietzsche was all like "Dude, Christianity is so the inevitable product of the withering lens of ecclesiastical Judaism being turned upon itself" and I was like "Whoa, what if all that already happened again within the structure of Christianity itself like some kind of denial-of-life feedback loop?" and Nietzsche was like "Totally." Disclaimer: this conversation may not actually have taken place.
read the hell out of this. and if you're a faithful one, read it twice. if you can get past the title without running for your rosary beads, you'll need to confront some hard truths (or at least beat some convincing arguments) to get out the other side. and if you're an atheist, it will give you a few zingers to keep people off your back.
Regardless the content of the book and your religious view, this book is amazing for the approach that Nietzsche has on the subject. It's an excellent exercise to think out of the box, to be mentally independent and objective.
It's a thought-provoking book, indeed. Nietzche was on a downward spiral during the writing of this, and some parts seem incoherent at first, but his evaluation of how humans invent and impose their moral concepts on others is pretty spot-on.
