I really enjoyed this book, a lot more than I expected to. I think as long as you remember that this is a ficticious novel woth historic figures in it then you will enjoy it. The characters are good and well rounded, I particularly liked George and I felt so sorry for him. I know the whole incest thing got a lot of people up in arms about the book but it is a good thread through the novel and IT IS FICTION! If she had said that this was a piece of historic fact then yes, you could be annoyed but she didn't. The plot moves along swiftkly and you really end up feeling for these characters, particularly Anne, even if she did bring it on herself. I love the parrallels at the beginning and end of the novel too. I can't wait to read the next one - Gregory has me hooked! (show less)

  • My first introduction to Philippa Gregory and I am hooked! The pages fly by as you are transported to medieval England and envision what a woman's life must have been like--despite the centuries, we are all equal in our femaleness.

Love this book! Movie was okay, not as much detail as the book. Another good one is The Last Boleyn

I can't say I liked the story but I am glad the author wanted to people to know what the less-than-stellar lives of women were like at court during this era. And while it was a difficult truth to read about that didn't make the story very enjoyable for me, it was a page-turner and I voraciously consumed this book absolutely needing to know what happened next. Very well-written and an accurate historical glimpse of King Henry the VIII's court. If nothing else, I am very thankful to be alive today!

    the movie?

i'm a little afraid to see this movie . . . if it doesn't do the book some sort of justice then i'll be irritated, and i don't see how it can encompass even the main events of the book without being 5 hours long.

List the historical inaccuracies you noticed!

I LOVED the book for its entertainment value, but I want to unveil ALL the historical inaccuracies! All you Boleyn experts out there... what literary liberties did you catch?! :)

Do you think Anne Boleyn was portrayed fairly?

I've read that Guardian newspaper, in a review, said she was presented as a "scheming trollop". However, she's also been viewed as charitable and responsible for many lives. Do you think Gregory gave her the short end of the stick?

    It's all about ambition.

This novel is all about the ambitions of a familiy called the Howards or Boleyns. Two sisters who each want to follow their heart. But their family has other prospects for Anne. Mary gets to start an affair with King Henry and falls in love with him. She is played like a pawn by her family who want nothing more but to rise high in King Henry's favor. Although both Henry and Mary are married the King takes what he wants and makes Mary his mistress. She is no longer allowed to share her husband William's bed. After years of trying to conceive a son with Henry's wife the Queen she becomes menopausal and can no longer bear childre. Mary who becomes pregnant by Henry is their new hope for a kingly son even though he will be a so called bastard. She gives birth to a girl but the King continues to try with her for a son....

    Help....

Ello everyone! I am a 10th grade student who reads welp pretty much all the time. I was very interested in reading this book but I wasn't sure of the style of the writing. I am not the biggest fan of Old English writing. I find it a little more difficult and timely. Please someone tell me if this book is in Old English type writing... THANKS =)
