Coraline
In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick wall—until Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.
Only different.
The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever.

Coraline is an extraordinary fairy tale/nightmare from the uniquely skewed imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

This whole story’s coolness surpasses the book.
1. The author wrote the first comic book to ever win a literary award.
2. The movie adaptation employed groundbreaking 3D technology.
3. It took 10 years to write this 160 page large font novel.
Unlike Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe which is kids adventure/life lesson. This is kids adventure/parents horror flick. It plays on parents’ worst fear, that their kids could be lured away by an amiable stranger and kidnapped. The heroine makes a very adult call regarding materialism – little life lesson to kids slipped in – that’s almost too heavy for the whimsical story but does give it meaning. Other than that it doesn’t moralize much and comes across as an edgy kid’s book.
First impression I'm like, come on talking cat *cough cough* Alice in Wonderland. Ooooh wall gives way to secret passage nice rip from C.S. Lewis. But then it totally takes off on its own and even comes into the 21st century with some spacey logic to justify this other world. Even more so there’s a graphic novel of it that looked lovely but how much do you want to spend on this story? Dying to see the movie! (show less)

Dug the hell out of this and the recent film adaptation. Neil Gaiman constantly runs the risk of disappearing right up his own backside but has somehow managed to keep from doing so in everything of his that I've read so far.
I can't help but wonder where the peculiar cast of supporting characters came from? Did Neil once live in a house with a bunch of ex-music hall types like Spink & Forcible, not to mention Bobisky's flea circus. Naturally a non-writer like me can't cope with the... (show more)

I can't help but wonder where the peculiar cast of supporting characters came from? Did Neil once live in a house with a bunch of ex-music hall types like Spink & Forcible, not to mention Bobisky's flea circus. Naturally a non-writer like me can't cope with the idea that Gaiman might be clever enough to have Invented them all by himself! LOL!
This also exhibits an admirable tendency to stay exactly as long as it needs to and not a moment longer. Wonder if he had to squabble with publishers to keep the book this long or if they leave him alone on details like that now or what?
Huzzah! I've just written a Super Review! That's what padding'll do for ya! ;) (show less)

Either my standards are becoming lower with old age or I have just read a higher ration of good to bad books recently. Coraline is one of those books that you pick up at noon and by dinner time that night you've finished the book but aren't really sure why it's dark outside. This book was pretty dark for a children's story and that is more than likely why I liked this book. It's not just a little creepy at times and is pretty suspenseful throughout. This book was pretty dark for a children's story and that is more than likely why I liked this book. It's not just a little creepy at times and is pretty suspenseful throughout. Gaiman has an amazing ability to create these worlds that you can immerse yourself in and really just get caught up in the story, watching as everything unfolds before you.
I'm not sure if I'll actually be reading this story to my young children, should they ever exist, but it is certainly one that I will keep around for them to read when they are a bit older. I was incredibly pleased with my choosing to read this excellent story! (show less)
