A Grief Observed
Written after his wife's tragic death as a way of surviving the "mad midnight moment," A Grief Observed is C.S. Lewis's honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself." This is a beautiful and unflinchingly homest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.

I just love CSLewis so much... so I thought on buying this book, definitely worth it! Still can't believe people could question his faith!!! this book is a diary of his pain, who ever had felt pain, knows what he is talking about! If you read the bible (ex: psalms) you will find lots of words like his! when I thought of buying I read some reviews here, and i liked so much this quote:

"You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you. It is easy to say you believe a rope to be strong and sound as long as you are merely using it to chord a box. But suppose you had to hang from that rope over a precipice. Wouldn't you then first discover how much you really trusted it?" (Lewis)
and really is like that! do you really trust yours? (show less)

This book was written as a journal by C.S. Lewis in the aftermath of his wife's death and chronicles his psychological and spiritual coping process in a way that I have not seen prior to this book. Originally, it was published anonymously and it has become a common read for people dealing with major life losses.
I think that the audience for this book goes well beyond those who are dealing with death and could be of use in helping anyone coping with any major loss, such as divorce or loss of a job. Any individual suffering with uncertainty and trying to reconcile that pain and confusion with the belief in an ultimately just and loving god will appreciate the thoughts expressed by Lewis in this book. I find it to be the finest of Lewis' works that I've come across for its raw power, its humanity, and the fact that it avoids so much of the over-intellectualizing found in much of Lewis' writing. This book showcases pure combat between reason, emotion, and faith and presents a more realistic and human view of Lewis than the paragon of Christianity he is often made out to be. (show less)

Grief
CS Lewis married late in life only to have a few short years with the love of his life. She died of cancer and this book is a look into a soul that is grieving, questioning and mourning the loss of a relationship. As I am grieivng the loss of a marriage I have many of the same feelings he expresses in this book.
