I really liked the movie (it is a little corny, but the relationships appear to work pretty well, and the story of the girl with leukemia, of course, had my attention) and Ellen Greenberg wrote a review of the most recent installment in the series a couple of months ago that made me think that maybe I should read the book itself. Of course, the book is better than the movie, and mostly in the ways you would predict--Carmen's struggle with her father's new family is alot more understandable and makes her look like much less of a selfish bitch and more of a struggling teen. Same with Bee--her seduction of Eric and subsequent struggle with her emotions related to it are much more understandable as discomfort about sexuality and what it means for her than being a tease who then can't handle the heat. the relationship between Bailey and Tibby is actually better in the movie, but Lena comes across in the book as a much more complicated and interesting character than in the movie. It was a super fast read. I liked the story lines for Carmen and Tibby, but I didn't like Lena or Bridget's story lines. The one thing I liked about the book was how it promoted friendship and uniqueness between girl friends. However, I felt like they were all older than the 15 going on 16 that they were written as. I'm pretty much over the teen girl books that promote love at first sight just because a guy is hunky and smiles at you, you have to swoon and fall in love. I would dearly love to see an author who writes a smart girl who values character and relationship over looks and the warm fuzzies. Over all it was an okay book...I'll probably read the others in the series just out of curiosity, but they wont merit a permanent home on my bookshelves. (show less)

I went ahead and got all four books, because I knew once I started reading the first one, I'd want to read the others right away. I liked the overall story, though not for its great literary value, obviously. I went ahead and got all four books, because I knew once I started reading the first one, I'd want to read the others right away. I liked the overall story, though not for its great literary value, obviously. It was just a "fun" book... and probably one that I will forget what happened rather quickly, since I read it so quickly without taking much time to think about the story. I think I just appreciate this book so much, because it was a welcome break from my textbooks. The cool thing about the book is that every girl will be able to relate somehow to at least one of the four main characters. None of them fit me exactly, but it was entertaining to read about their lives, their likes & dislikes & struggles, and just take a little time to relate and remember what life was like in high school. I skipped it because I had not seen or read the first movie/book, but when I learned about the series of books, I saw there was a gift set that had both movies and the first book, so I bought it and read it. I was impressed. There were a lot of notable differences (e.g. in the movie they all paid for the pants together, but in the book Carmen paid for it all herself) for brevity and visual purpo... I skipped it because I had not seen or read the first movie/book, but when I learned about the series of books, I saw there was a gift set that had both movies and the first book, so I bought it and read it. I was impressed. There were a lot of notable differences (e.g. in the movie they all paid for the pants together, but in the book Carmen paid for it all herself) for brevity and visual purposes, and possibly also to make the movie rated PG. I was blown away by this book... I couldn't stop reading it. It's currently my favorite book. Personally, I think Bridget's story was a little weak compared to the others, but other than that, perfect. I actually cried when Bailey died and when Carmen met up with Tibby again.
