Mma Ramotswe is busy investigating her latest case: a woman who is looking for her family. The problem is, the woman doesn't know her real name of whether any members of her family are now living. Meanwhile, Phuti Radiphuti has bought Mma Makutsi a glorious new bed. Unfortunately, it will inadvertently cause her several sleepless nights. And life is no less complicated at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, where Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni--Mma Ramotswe's estimable husband--has fallen under the sway of a doctor who has promised a miracle cure for his daughter's medical condition, which Mma Ramotswe finds hard to believe. But Precious Ramotswe deals with these difficulties with her usual grace and good humor, and in the end discovers that the biggest miracles in life are often the small ones. (show less)

I love this series -- each book takes me a way to a quiet and peaceful place. The characters are marvelous. The author makes one truly care about them and their lives. For me, the plots are secondary. I enjoy them, but my love for these books stems from the way they carry me to a different world. They have made Botswana move high up on my list of travel destinations. Every time I finish one of these novels, I am happier than when I started. I am looking forward to the debut of the new HBO series based onb the books. The "teaser" on HBO ("Botswana - The Gem of Africa") whetted my appetite and provides an opportunity to see Alexander McCall Smith talk about his works and the country he loves. It will be hard to see actors playing characters who are fully-formed in my imagination -- but these stories deserve a wider audience. (show less)

I just love these books. They are the most relaxing, peaceful and soothing stories, and every once in awhile there is a little writing gem that you can read over and over --a little comment on values or love or family that make you stop and think (but never preachy).
Struggling a little with the HBO series because, as I fully expected, not quite the picture I had created in my mind's eye -- however, I was in the middle of this book when I saw the first episode and it didn't ruin the book a... (show more)

Struggling a little with the HBO series because, as I fully expected, not quite the picture I had created in my mind's eye -- however, I was in the middle of this book when I saw the first episode and it didn't ruin the book and the scenery is so-o-o beautiful that I'm really glad that HBO has turned the stories into a TV series. OK, I admit these books aren't wildly inventive, and they're certainly not plot driven. But as I've read them, the characters have started to feel like friends. Mma Ramotswe's attitude toward life -- to slow down, look around, appreciate the little things, and treat others with respect and caring -- is admirable. The small-scale adventures experienced by the characters touch on universal themes of life and living. Like the other books in the series, "Miracle at Speedy Motors" is ... (show more)
