In nineteenth-century Vienna, a drama of love, fate, and will is played out amid the intellectual ferment that defined the era. Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. In nineteenth-century Vienna, a drama of love, fate, and will is played out amid the intellectual ferment that defined the era. Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him.

When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure," Breuer never expects that he too will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient. In When Nietzsche Wept, Irvin Yalom blends fact and fiction, atmosphere and suspense, to unfold an unforgettable story about the redemptive power of friendship.

The end of this book liberated me with the sentence "...the key to living well is first to will that which is necessary and then to love that which is willed"
I finally saw clearly that we people, we are all afraid of the same demons: fear of loneliness and death. These demons are all undercover...surfacing as obsessions, anxiety, and anger, just to name a few.
But all these demons can be fought simply by recognizing that you have a choice, the choice to "love your fate".
It took me long to pass the middle of this book, mostly because I couldn't see the reasons these two smart and powerful man, Nietzsche and Breuer, could be so entrapped in their obsessions with their dream women.
In the end I understood that they had the same underlying fear as I do, just differently expressed. Only then each sentence reverberated deeply in my head...together with the fear of dying alone. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

An interesting novel of psychology and philosophy and obsession. Thought provoking and an interesting story too.

wonderful... just wonderful. Irvin Yalom has other equally wonderful books, some that are not novel but rather real life tales of Psychotherapy that are described in a creative way. ('Momma, and the meaning of life' is a must read if you are in awe of the mirroring technique used by psychoanalysts).
