Which do you prefer: Island or Brave New World? (both by Huxley)

Island all the way. I never could get into BNW, despite having to read it for class. Island deals with deeper concepts and presents them in a better more understandable way. They should teach Island in high schools, not BNW.

Brave New world is more well rounded and concise in its philosophies, as well as the characterisation of idea(l)s.Better but in light of Island's optimism toward reason, it is the also the more pessemistic novel as it sheds light simply on to reality.

Island. It left a long lasting impression. Yes it is a more simple book but the ideas have wide implications. I often think of the birds reminders, "Pay attention." It has many positive ideas to take away on what it means to live a quality life as well as the issues with our current institutions and governments.

Both are wonderful. Island has more depth, both in the story line and in the characters. BNW is less difficult to absorb/better for Sunday reading.

Although Island may contain a few important ideas to be considered (particularly the words of the parrots:here and now boys and girls) the second time that I read it much of it seemed juvenile and I wondered why I had liked it so well before. I think part of it was that I have read better Utpoias (Walden Two by BF Skinner) but there has been no more terrifying dystopia than Brave New World. Also I much prefer the "sad ending" of Brave New World or 1984 to the sad ending of a utopia. Island may seem more positive or optimistic but the sad ending is really more a bad ending in a positive book than one so wrought with misery and injustice like the dystopias.
