This is one of the most entertaining Grisham books I have read. It is as much an adventure tale as it is a legal thriller. Nate O'Riley is a standa... (show more)

Enter the lawyers. Nate O'Riley is fresh out of rehab, a disgraced corporate attorney handpicked for his last job: to find Rachel Lane at any cost. It's a hit!
No, it's a flop!
The one thing that I got from this book was a fear of dengue fever. Interesting plot, but didn't get me emotionally involved like Rainmaker of Firm.

Another very good book by Mr. Grisham. I was particularly impressed with the beginning - it did a nice job of sucking me right into the story. After they gripping beginning, it did start to meander a tad; I was unsure who the lead character was supposed to be for a while. But then it settled down and gave us a very good tale about redemption, hitting home the point that it's never too late to make a change. I was particularly impressed with the use of God and religion in this book. It just seems that there are so many books that I've read lately where the religious characters are all psychotic villains, it was sure nice to see a positive message involving Christianity for once. Another way that I can tell this was a great book was through the pacing - I tore right through this thing and thought it was too short...but good books will do that! (show less)

In true John Grisham fashion this novel is aimed at tugging at the heart strings of middle America. Nate O'Reily is a twice divorced (like I have any room to criticize) lawyer with a life that parallels a Nirvana song. Nate is an addict, a lousy father, irresponsible, and not only has the IRS chasing him, but could possibly be indicted and lose his license to practice law.
Yet it is this same man who is sent on an expedition to a remote corner of Brazil to find an heir to a deceased bill... (show more)

Yet it is this same man who is sent on an expedition to a remote corner of Brazil to find an heir to a deceased billionaire's fortune. Hah! Moving along, this heir is a missionary who Nate falls in love with, then sets out to ensure that eccentric billionaire's (Troy Phelan) ingrate children get little of the fortune, as stated in the will. Fast forwarding to the end, the waste-of-breath children (besides missionary girl in Brazil) only get $50 mil each, and the rest will go to Rachel Lane (missionary girl).
So, Nate treks off to Brazil yet again to show how he's redeemed himself, becoming a good-clean-and-sober man, reconciling differences with his children and ex-wives, only to discover that Rachel Lane died of malaria two weeks earlier. Shocking! Yes, I mock.
Now, I must admit that John Grisham's "A Painted House" is one of my favorite books, I feel like this book was written with one thing in mind, corporate greed. Appeal to as many people as possible and sell those books, scads of them! I hope he at least got a new car out of the deal... (show less)
