Len Deighton's third novel has become a classic, as compelling and suspenseful now as when it first exploded on to the bestseller lists.

My first Len Deighton book. Fairly difficult to follow - but I think that could just be his writing style. Enjoyed it though
Outstanding. Its minute details bring you right back into the middle of the Cold War.
The pacing leaves you exhausted. Great read for a cool autumn Saturday afternoon with a pint and a cigar.
Obviously written by someone who knows more than his bio lets on.
A competent and engaging spy thriller - not as good as The IPCRESS File though. Still, the death of Hallam was ingenious. . .
meticulous behind the scenes account of post-war intrigue and espionage. see Lives of Others, then read the book.
It's opened me up some more, to spy thrillers, for sure. This one "felt meaty" to read - a real chewy storyline which requires, perhaps, a touch more than the average attention, to keep track of all the crossovers / links and connections.. but then again, therein lies the rub of the spy game..!!
Another Len Deighton novel featuring Harry Palmer and in my opinion the best one. Very good and well written plot. In common with the other novels featuring Harry Palmer this was made into a film starring Michael Caine in the lead role and I find I read this book using the actors distinctive voice. Very good.
The best of the Harry Palmer novels. Taughtly plotted, tightly written and evocative of a time and era. Outstanding.
