Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981.  Was it murder or self-defense?  For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares.  John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative reads like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.  Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case.

It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman's Card Club; the turbulent young redneck gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the "soul of pampered self-absorption"; the uproariously funny black drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young blacks dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight.  These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.  Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, this enormously engaging portrait of a most beguiling Southern city has become a modern classic. (show less)

Quote-leftA fascinating look into just how insane people are in Savannah. I've lived here nearly all my life, I've passed by Club One where Lady Chablis performs, and I've certainly been around people as...ah...eccentric as those about which Berendt wrote. Not only is this a wonderful, compelling, and entertaining book, it's also a good warning to those of you considering a visit to Savannah.Quote-right

Quote-leftI really enjoyed this book. I finished it just in the nick of time before visiting Savannah, and I'm really glad I did. A very well written account of the Williams murder trial and the events preceeding and following it. I would recommend this book to anyone.Quote-right

Quote-leftA study of Savannah as much as the characters involved. What happens when a city is engulfed in its own life? It's own way of living? Managing the status quo? What happens when circumstances would turn it all upside-down?Quote-right

Quote-leftThis was such a great book! The characters are such fun to read about as each has an interesting quirk about them. It most certainly makes you want to meet the real life individuals that help make the story so memorable.Quote-right

Quote-leftI read this after returning from a trip to Savannah. It's absolutely fantastic: a nonfiction work that reads like a novel, full of hilariously eclectic characters and, at its heart, a murder mystery. A must read.Quote-right

Quote-leftI look at this story as a cake, with the plot as the cake and the charater development as the icing. The cake is good, better than a lot, but the icing is to die for, and there is sooooo much of it!!Quote-right

Quote-leftThis was miles better than I'd expected. It was so funny and engaing, the characters were steller (I cannot BELIEVE this was non-fiction!) and so much fun. When it got to the trial time I was a tense wreck waiting to find out how it ends up. It was very enjoyable and well written, read like a novel which is about the best compliment a non-fiction book can get in my opinion.Quote-right

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey. According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. more
