All Quiet on the Western Front
Erich Maria Remarque, Ramarque, E.M. Remarque, Erich Mari Remarque
Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. One of the best books I've read in recent years, and definitely one of the best war novels ever written. Though everyone knows quite a bit about WWII, very few people really realize just how much of an impact WWI had on the world - sadly, it is often passed over, and mostly forgotten. This novel reminds us of the victims on both sides of the battlefield, and humanizes and restores the memory of an event too immense to be thought of as cavalierly as it often is. Remarque has done an astounding job with this book, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Love this book!! I can see why Hitler banned it when it was first published because it is not a pro-war story! It is a must read!
haunting. puts one right into the trenches and the mind of the protagonist. one of the books that had a profound impact on me.
the most realisic description of WWI that I have read. It doesn't glorify the war...which is refreshing.
Very, very good. An excellent and simple anti-war book. Then they went and made a film version of it with John Boy Walton and Ernest Bourgnine.
without a doubt: the most shattering book i have ever read. i need to read it again, as it should not be a one-time experience. i think i will grow with every read.
Great read. Couldn't put it down. Really portrayed the horror and emotions of what war is like on a young man that grows up to fast.
Several editions have "The greatest war novel of all time" printed on the cover. I would have to agree there!
