Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has since become a world classic -- a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short. This will probably get me shouted at but i didn't really enjoy this book. The problem was that it's a diary of a 13 year old girl. A selfish 13 year old girl who is quite self centred as all teenagers are. It's just not very interesting reading about this girl and her relationships with the other annex members (her relationship with he father is very odd!)
I can't help but think it's been made famous because she died so tragically under such terrible circumstances. It's horrible when you come to the end and there is just nothing. We know now that she was taken away, seperated from her family and died in a concentration camp. I think what makes this book great is that you learn all about her (even if you don't like her). She was a normal girl, living a normal life, and then. because of her religion she was killed. (show less)

Now that I have retired, I am trying to read all of those books that I meant to read, but never got around to. This is one of those. Although many books written 60 plus years ago, don't hold their immediacy or their relevance, this is a total exception. I have never read a book that touched me so deeply with such simplicity. Now that I have retired, I am trying to read all of those books that I meant to read, but never got around to. This is one of those. Although many books written 60 plus years ago, don't hold their immediacy or their relevance, this is a total exception. I have never read a book that touched me so deeply with such simplicity. Its focus on the small things of daily life against the backdrop of the War and the Holocaust from the point of view of a young girl conveys more than all of the intellectual tomes I have read combined. Anne was a real young girl with all of the temper and confusion one would expect, but she also had an exceptional ability to relay her experiences and saw herself honestly. She disclosed to Kitty, her diary, that she would like to be a journalist and someday an author and the reader knows she would have been excellent at both. This work brings a time I didn't experience personally to a level of familiarity that I normally could not have hoped to experience. Having visited the Holocaust Memorial at Yad Vashem in Israel a eleven years ago, including the Children's Memorial, reading this book completed a connection to those who perished for me. It is unbelievable that any sane human being today could espouse the discriminatory garbage that led to the tragedy of the Holocaust or deny that it happened. We must all remember and do all in our power to prevent it from happening to any group ever again. God Bless you Anne. (show less)

I read this recently since one of my kids will be reading it next year in school and I was curious about it. I never had to read it in school, and when I tried to when I was young, I gave up on it because all I saw in it was bunch of grouchy people living together and fighting all the time and they were probably all going to die anyway. Well, this time, I was amazed at the articulate writing and insight of a 14/15 year old girl. It was neat for me to read it and remember a bit the diffi... (show more)

It was neat for me to read it and remember a bit the difficulties of being that age since I have kids who will be there in a few years. I really appreciated alot more about Anne, and found the diary more fascinating, although I think when her father edited it, he could have left out a few more things, it was a bit too frank in places. The Diary is a Fraud
This diary is a fraud, this book is a work of fiction. Anne Frank fell ill with typhus at the Bergen-Belsen camp and died in March 1945, but the diary was written in ballpoint pen. Ballpoint pens were not even available before 1951. Otto Frank must have made a great deal of money off his dead daughter's name.

A tragic yet insparational book
I read this book in Grade-school. I thought it was wonderful Tragic Heartwarming and quite incredible that such a young girl could have lived and died in such a short life been able to describe in a way that made us able to comprehend the way people survived in incomprehensible situations. I was unable to put it down and I recommend it highly not because it will make you feel good but because it is important for people to understand how prejudices can kill. and also that you can survive unimaginable cruelty.
