After finding Bruenor’s helmet in the ruins of the tower, from the town of Shallows, Drizzt goes into a rage, and starts ambushing the orc camps. He thinks that Bruenor has been killed in the destruction of the town, and reverts to his drow skills (faerie fire and darkness globes) in killing the orcs. From the sky on their pegasi, the two elves are watching Drizzt and fear that he will travel down the same road as they’re dear Ellifain. The dwarf tribe Battlehammer have reach the gates of Mithral Hall, and are struggling to defend it, with Cattie-brie’s unending supply of arrows and Wulfgar’s Aegis-fang. While Bruenor is still in a "coma" with the priests struggling to keep him from death, Regis once again is made Regent, and his first danger comes from their trade rivals, in a meeting with the alchemist Nanfoodle and the Sceptrana Shoudra. Cattie-brie doesn’t seem overly concerned over her loose of Drizzt, for being distracted by the inevitable death of Bruenor, and fending off the orcs. Obould is made one with their god Gruumsh. He is increased in strength and agility. This is such a boost to his confidence, that he is beginning to get out of control. He no longer fears the frost giants or the drow party. The drow party learn that it is Drizzt behind the attacks on the orc camps, and trap his two elf friends in a cave. Hilarious, loveable Pikel looses an arm in a shower of shale by the giants. Drizzt rises above the drow trap and is able to kill the two Ad’non and Donnia, saving the two elves. They take to attacking the orcs coming out of their holes to join King Obould’s army, driving them back. Obould gets wind of this and sets out to stop the trio, striking down Tarathiel. Regis, with the use of his ruby pendent, discovers Nanfoodle and Shoudra’s plan. Knowing they can not return to Marchion Elastul, they join Cattie-brie and Wulfgar and are able to destroy the giants catapults. The battle to drive the dwarves inside Mithral Hall comes to an end. There are great surprises, and heart racing excitement in store! This book was way, way better than the first, 'The Thousand Orcs'.
