Sam has left his master for dead after a battle with the giant spider, Shelob; but Frodo is still alive -- now in the foul hands of the Orcs. And all the while the armies of the Dark Lord are massing as the One Ring draws ever nearer to the Cracks of Doom. (show less)

Still an absolutely amazing journey, which I'll never tire of taking.

Tolkien often gets lauded to the point of near infallibility. This happens with many authors but few are so deserving as Tolkien. He is a master storyteller and there is a reason that so many people consider him the grandfather to modern sci-fi and fantasy storytelling.

Whether you like romance, action, adventure, magic, drama, tragedy or comedy, The Lord of the Rings series has all of these in spades. In particular, The Return of the King has some of the most moving and human experiences to be found on the written page.

Being a fan of the books prior to the release of the amazing Peter Jackson adaptations, I can say that these books only improve with age like a fine wine. They are warming to the soul and they release you to a land where your cares suddenly seem so minute and unimportant.

Escape to Middle-earth again. Pick up The Lord of the Rings. (show less)

The final book of the lord of the rings trilogy, and wow it went right back to being a bit on the boring side. More singing. :( Why?! Just say they sang and stop annoying me with things that have nothing to do with the story. Speaking of things that have nothing to do with the story, why mention all of the previous rulers of Rohan. It's like reading numbers of the bible! Boring! There were some great parts of the story, but I don't like how Tolkien went through and told off of Pippen; then all of Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn; then all of Gandolf and Merry; then finally all of Frodo and Sam. Why not tell the story as it goes and all of the stopping going back in time and restarting to do it all over again and again and again. Was annoying, but the stories were good. There is also the essay, "Concerning Hobbits". I believe this is a typo, and it's actual title was suppose to be "Concerning Boredom." I really don't need to know or care about the history of hobbits. It doesn't matter they they have been shrinking over time, or that they are several different races of them when they don't hold any bearing on the story. There is also an Appendix The Annals of The Kings and Rulers. I didn't even waste my time attempting to read the book of Numbers yet again, lest I lose the will to live. Sadly I must mention once again. Watch the movies, they are more entertaining and not boring. (show less)

I finally finished reading the complete Trilogy today, February 4th 2009. Since so many people have read/watched the series, I feel as though i've become part of their world, I mean, Tolkien-fans share some kind of understanding, not that we think middle-earth really exists.....? I'm not exactly like any of the female characters, but I admire their virtues -- Arwen sacrificed the life she could have had to be with the one she loved, Eowyn was brave in battle fighting for her people and giving up royalty for real love, and Rosie waited patiently back home for her true love to find her again. The 3 main relationships all ended up being success stories, and actually were not bad examples of courtship, either.: Arwen and Aragorn (whose continuing tale is in the appendix, although their ending is kinda sad with their deaths), Eowyn and Faramir (see The Steward and the King chapter), and Rosie and Sam (see the Gray Havens chapter...and the appendix sharing their family tree info). If it weren't for the bits of sweet romance, I don't think I could've read through all the battles and darkness. (show less)

I just finished reading this whole series out loud to my wife after starting 2 years ago! I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with these books. I am a huge fan of the movies, but I have to say with all my heart, that they don't even come close to the brilliance of the books. From the personalities of the characters to the omission of wonderful events and people, the movies time after time fall short of the captivating genius of the real story. While the movies remain some of my favorite works of film, I can't help but long for more. To any and all who love the stories found in the movies, I urge you to take time for these great works of literature. Do not be put off by the length. Though many pages are filled with majestic descriptions of nature and the landscape surrounding the characters(which can at times be somewhat exhausting), keep pressing on to page after page of wonder and excitement. Enjoy the adventure!!! (show less)
