I had to borrow these books from a friend to read them the first time, and she was reading them before loaning them to me. I had to wait for every book for a LONG time, because she was a very slow reader. I would go through an entire book in just a couple of days, then have to wait to read the next one for a couple of weeks. I was GOING CRAZY waiting to find out what happened next! Needless to say, I have been a HUGE fan for many years, and I was very excited about the movies being made, as well. In my experience, after reading the book, the movie is seldom as good and usually disappoints on almost every level, so I looked forward to them with equal parts excitement and dread, fearing the butcher job that would probably be done. Imagine how happy I was that the movies exceeded EVERY expectation! There were things missing, but the job was done so well that a person who had read and loved the books had to acknowledge that the parts that were missing did not detract in any way from all that was still there. I have read the entire trilogy numerous times, and will probably read them all again. Some of my favorite books of all time. (show less)

I've read this trilogy several times, and, as much as I love the story as a whole, the middle installment of Lord of the Rings gets a little soggy.

There's some really wonderful characters introduced here, like Shelob, Gollum, Faramir, Eowyn and Treebeard, but I don't mind saying that I think the movie did a better job in some respects than Tolkien did. I know, I know, string me up and leave me hanging. I can't help it.

Locations like Minas Morgul and The Dead Marshes and little songs and poems like the tale of the Entwives are all fascinating and very well done, but the all around dramatic tension is underwhelming for a story about a world falling apart under the threat of war.

More often than not, I'm just compelled to get through The Two Towers as fast as possible so I can move onto the Return of the King. Scream blasphemy all you want, but it's how I feel. Sorry. (show less)

I dragged through parts of this book. I started it already sold on Aragorn, so the first half of it was quite enjoyable. And I loved Treebeard - such a creative character and race. Then we got to Frodo and Sam. They're traveling toward Mordor with Gollum and I feel like not much is happening and it's just going on for chapters. I didn't understand how the little nuances could be character development and I didn't think much of these characters (except Gollum, but he's still a bit of a mystery... (show more)

I didn't understand how the little nuances could be character development and I didn't think much of these characters (except Gollum, but he's still a bit of a mystery) so I really lost a lot of my interest. I stopped at a point here for a week long break because I didn't want to try to push myself through it.

Turns out I just postponed dragging through it until this weekend. But! It got better when they met Faramir - he's an absolutely interesting character and I want to read more about him right away. And then Sam actually steps up at the very end Sam takes a big developmental step and I found myself actually cheering for him. It's a far more impressive step in the book, so I didn't really love it in the movie in past viewings.

So overall, I liked The Towers. Not my favorite book, but I'm certainly interested enough to finish the trilogy. (show less)
