I have pleasant memories about reading this whole series years ago. Once I got hooked I couldn't stop. This series gives the history of the USA through one family's tree. It made me curious what my ancestors were like and what part they played throughout history.

While this book did drag in places, it was written wonderfully in that incomparable John Jakes style. I'm usually not a fan of historical fiction other than the civil war era, but I really enjoyed the descriptions of colonial pre-America. The characters were vivid and it was enjoyable to put the faces of our founding fathers with their character's actions and quotes. This story also chronicles the most basic of human stories, who am I and where will I make my stand. This in by no means an ... (show more)
