In one of the most hotly anticipated sequels in memory, J.K. Rowling takes up where she left with Harry's second year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Old friends and new torments abound, including a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girl's bathroom, an outrageously conceited professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, and a mysterious force that turns Hogwarts students to stone.

J.K. Rowling's sequel to her debut novel is even better than the first but gets half a star off due to its non-progression aspect but more of an introduction aspect as it introduces the character of Ginny Weasley, who is personally one of my favorite characters next to Luna Lovegood, in this entire series.

The book is set into year two at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and I have to say that this one did a very good job with foreshadowing compared to the last novel. The signs of the Basilisk being the creature in the Chamber of Secrets is very fulfilling as you learn more and more of what is happening. Such signs as the roosters Hagrid owns being killed off because a rooster's crowe will kill a Basilisk. The part where Ginny talks about being covered in feathers and blood foreshadows she is the one writing the treatening messages on the wall and killing the roosters. Just a lot of good foreshadowing done. Also, the showing of Hermoine making a mistake for the first time is awesome too as well as her investigative skills which are shown even more in fourth novel.

Finally, the more action in this novel was quite entertaining to read but was also very cool to watch in the movie. Once again, I suggest this novel to anyone who likes good fantasy books and those with an open heart and an open mind towards any form of literature. I also suggest to go in order too of novels since this is truly part of a series that makes sense - especially later on - if you go in series. That is a must as well. (show less)

I don't know why, but neither this book nor the movie based off of it ever really did it for me. I actually found myself annoyed through most of the reading of the novel, which strikes me as odd, in retrospect, given the great love I have for the series in general.

Where do I start with my issues with this book? The flying car bit irritated me to no end...when I do re-read this book, I tend to skip up until the characters are actually all back at the castle. The mentality of the main characters in the book annoyed me as well, something that didn't happen before and didn't occur again until Book 5. And Dobby...oh, where do I start with Dobby? The Jar Jar Binks of Harry Potter. If only I could console myself with the thought that he was created to sell toys, then at least I could partially understand his presence. Imagine, in approximately equal proportions, the more irritating parts of C-3PO, Yoda, Gollum, and the kids from a Special Ed. class. (show less)

This was a very good read, it was a shorter read than what was to come in the following books and was still very much a youthful storyline/

A really good sequel to the first book. And the plot twists and turns were indeed interesting. Many aspects of the story were introduced here and that made me see that this series would be around for a long time to come if it addressed the dimensions raised in the later books.

    Movie

I liked this one as a book, but really didn't think the movie was that good... something about it was kind of slow to me

    Is this your least favorite?

I don't really understand why people say this was their least favorite of the series. I think the fourth was not that strong. Your thoughts?
