I held out on the Harry Potter books for many reasons that range from the simple fact that they were never available in the library to my preconcieved notions that there were "kids" books. I finally picked them up, and I am very happy that I did. Rowling is a superb writer. For me, a good writer knows what the heck a semicolon is and is able to sum up an entire image in one sentence. Rowling's descriptions are vivid and imaginative. She is a writer, unlike some of the young adult authors who write about interesting topics, but are not actually good writers. I have seen the movie version, and I was shocked to find that the movie was fairly true to the book - at times down to the exact dialogue. I look forward to books 5-7, because I have not seen the movie version of these yet. I would recommend this series to anyone, even pretention, English teachers like myself. (show less)

Not allowed to read Harry Potter? Or don't want to?
When I went to Europe this past summer with a student ambassador group I met a girl in my group who was not allowed to read the Harry Potter series because her parents had banned it. I asked her why they banned it and she replied that they "dont think it is moralily correct." I just couldn't understand it. I asked her if she ever tried to read it and she said no, then I asked her if her parents had even read it and they she said no. How can you ban a book you havn't even read? Then when I, and the other 39 kids in the group told her how good the book was and began talking about it and such i asked her if she would read it when she moved out of her parents house and she said no. I could not get it! I thought the days of book banning were over? There is a very wise old saying that you cannot judge a book by its cover and it most definatly fits here. What is you take on the banning of the book that has happened in many homes? Or maybe you are like this girl I met and are not allowed to read it? Or maybe you banned it?
