Now I have read the book twice and it is still funny and poignant at the same time. I can understand that you may not relate to it if you did not attend a high pressure college or did not grow up in India, but then you do not only read books that you can relate to. All in all, highly recommended to every IIT graduate whether they did well at IIT or not, their spouses or significant others, their siblings, their best friends, their bosses, their employees - in other words if you have a close connection to an IITian in your life, read it. I was given this book at the height of its popularity, while visiting India in 2007. I read it shortly thereafter. Please keep in mind that I read this book over a year and a half ago when reading this review.

This is how I remember it...

I think that perhaps much of this book was lost on me, since I didn't grow up in or attend college in India- although my husband is Indian and I have spent time there as well. Much of the plot seemed inconceivable and unrealistic. I had difficulty relating to the characters. I will give it credit for being a very different type of Indian novel, when compared to others which almost always portray a harsh existence of the characters and their environs. Five Point Someone, although a bit odd, was light-hearted and, in its own way, fun. It wasn't excessively formulaic and it defied convention by presenting three highly intelligent characters attending India's best college- and failing! (show less)

  • Read this on my recent tripto India. Considering all the hype I expected a lot more from the book. It is readable alright but nothing more.
