The Artist's Way is the seminal book on the subject of creativity. An international bestseller, millions of readers have found it to be an invaluable guide to living the artist's life. Still as vital today-or perhaps even more so-than it was when it was first published one decade ago, it is a powerfully provocative and inspiring work. This has been on-loan to me for a very long time, from Edna. On a whole it is a wonderful book, and the exercises really help you to focus on allowing your artistic side to bloom. I think the main problem most blocked artists have is coming up with excuses for why they don't have time to work on creating. When you are given assignments, especially things like the morning pages, it gives you a structure that helps you schedule that time. My one complaint about this book is that I feel like it ... I think the main problem most blocked artists have is coming up with excuses for why they don't have time to work on creating. When you are given assignments, especially things like the morning pages, it gives you a structure that helps you schedule that time. My one complaint about this book is that I feel like it possibly goes a little overboard with the idea that you are blocked because of outside influences. While I definitely believe that is part of it, sometimes there are just parts of YOU that need to be told to hush up so your artist can emerge. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who feels like they need an artistic jump start. (show less)

I like the concepts of morning pages and the Artist's date, but I think the overall theory Cameron utilizes in the book needs further development and research. A lot of her ideas are similar to ones I have discovered in psychology, and so she could do better to use some of their research instead of just basing her books on her experiences and those of her students. The book should apply to anyone, but can it really be applied in all cases? What about when she says that the main cause of a ... (show more)

What about when she says that the main cause of a lack of creativity is your parents preventing or blocking your creative impulses? Cameron is emphasizing the past when she says this, and assuming that if you are not that creative, something must have happened in your childhood to cause this. Her analysis of creativity is very similar to Freudian theory in that respect. As later psychologists realized, you can't just look at one time period in a person's life, but the whole lifespan. This is because there can be multiple sources to one problem and all must be considered. (show less)
