I am loving Wilbur Smit's work more and more with every one of his works that i get to read.
We meet the Courtney brothers at a young age and we join Sean Courtney for an adventure that lasts for over 10 years. In the 10 years after Sean leaves the family farm, he becomes more than just rich, he loses all his money and fame, and he starts from scratch again.
Now personally, I am not happy at all with what happened to Duff, I think there could have been much more in the story from that side.... (show more)

On the other hand, I believe that what happened to Katrina was best for the series, and having her in the story was a pain to me. The last third of the book was painful and difficult to get through. It was not bad, it was just not what i "Wanted" it to be.
I can't wait to get to read the 2nd Book in the series, probably in a week or two. (show less)

  • The book itself carries quite a fast pace (which is good) and the main character, Sean Courtenay does it all. I found the book to be a bit of a downer overall. I found it hard to like Sean. Great things happen to him and terrible things happen to him but I didn't feel emotionally involved in any of it. A bit of a dissapointment for me.

Wilbur Smith's best work undoubtedly lies in his series on Ancient Egypt. If you happen to have read "Men of Men" before reading this, then play the game I like to call 'spot the recycled characters and plots' as you saunter through this one. Entertaining, all the same, though.

The second Wilbur Smith book I have read. This book is the first one he published in 1964. I am now going to read them in order as they were published. Wonderful story about Africa and the characters in it.

My first Wilbur Smith book, but won't be my last. A good page turner and a simple read. Nothing out of this world, but a nice plane/vacation read, interspersed with some African history.

  • Probably the best book Wilbur Smith ever wrote, and I've read loads of his books. Excellent book, and as a bonus, it's the first of a trilogy.
