The book itself carries quite a fast pace (which is good) and the main character, Sean Courtenay does it all. I found the book to be a bit of a downer overall. I found it hard to like Sean. Great things happen to him and terrible things happen to him but I didn't feel emotionally involved in any of it. A bit of a dissapointment for me. (show less)

Wilbur Smith's best work undoubtedly lies in his series on Ancient Egypt. If you happen to have read "Men of Men" before reading this, then play the game I like to call 'spot the recycled characters and plots' as you saunter through this one. Entertaining, all the same, though.

The second Wilbur Smith book I have read. This book is the first one he published in 1964. I am now going to read them in order as they were published. Wonderful story about Africa and the characters in it.
