HILARIOUS! I was actually laughing out loud - my husband couldn't figure out what was so funny. This is perfect for a quick, light, weekend read. I... (show more)

This is my third Christopher Buckley novel, the others being Thank You for Smoking and Boomsday, both of which I enjoyed immensely. Supreme Courtship, however was a disappointment. Although the book has some funny parts overall it falls very flat. I expect an outrageous plot from Buckley and this is no exception, but the plot is too convoluted and in some cases too convenient in how everything ties together in a ridiculous fashion.
The premise of Supreme Courtship is unpopular President who after getting his first two Supreme Court justices denied by a power-hungry Senate leader, decides to nominate the judge from a Judge Judy-like TV show. This judge is like a smart Sarah Palin; she's from Texas, loves guns and BBQ, politically savvy, and is really hot. So, it's funny at first, but once she's confirmed by page 50 (I'm not really giving anything away, because if she's not confirmed you have no book) the plot flies out of control. Buckley makes fun of a lot of things that deserve making fun of, such as reality-TV, writers for shows like The West Wing, the confirmation process itself for political appointees, and general Washington politics.
I can't really recommend Supreme Courtship. If you're looking for political satire, I'd recommend Boomsday instead. It's just as relevant with a much tighter plot. Thank You for Smoking is also good although a little dated because the war on smoking is pretty much lost so fighting on the side of smoking rights is pretty much boring now... (show less)

Listened to iton CD. Pretty bad, I thought. Maybe my liberal leanings made it impossible to sympathize with the oh-shucks, veto-all-spending bills president. As a lawyer, I found Buckley's depiction of supreme court arguments pretty laughable. They may be dry and boring, but they don't speak in latin! Plus, the moral of the story seems to be that a supreme court justice should vote based on what her heart says, and not what the law is. Which is, you know, a really scary idea.

And for what it's worth, Anne Heche, the narrator on the CD, is really terrible. She sounds like a robot. (show less)

Disappointment. I was attracted to this book because I'm very interested in the Supreme Court and liked the premise, but the character development was very thin and the plot just seemed to stumble along and crash through one implausibility after another.
